We often link interior design with creativity. However, there it also involves some degree of science. Usually, interior designers have some set of rules to follow. Consequently, these rules are determined based on the principles and elements of interior design. Interior designing consists of seven elements. These are space, forms, line, light, color, texture, and pattern. Furthermore, the key to obtaining a superb interior is to keep these elements well balanced.

Aside from improving the look of your room, making these elements work together can also improve its functionality. The interior designer will first evaluate the room based on these elements. Then, they will use these elements in improving the different features and imperfections of the space.

Space

Space is considered as the basis for interior design. It is important to assess this element in order to make sure that you can take advantage of every available space. Typically, it is impossible to change the available space, hence it is important that you must work within the physical limits of the room. Interior designers can work within the three-dimensional space. The available space could either be bare or filled, depending on its design and functionality.

There are two kinds of spaces. These are positive space and negative space. If space is filled with objects, then it is considered as a positive space. On the other hand, negative space is the empty space in the room.

It is important to achieve a balance between the positive space and the negative spaces in order to prevent congestion. This balance will be determined based on the needs of the homeowner.

Forms

Forms

Forms include the shape of the objects within the room as well as the shape of the room itself. Forms can either be natural or geometric. Natural forms are also known as organic forms that are done by nature. While geometric forms are shapes that have square edges, usually these are objects that are man-made.

When placing objects in the room, it is important to consider its proportion and scale. If you want to achieve harmony and balance, then you should choose objects with the same shapes. On the other hand, choosing objects with different shapes can lead to confusion.

Line

Using vertical, horizontal, or dynamic lines can help in emphasizing the shape of the room. Lines can be achieved through the structural design and furnishings within the room. Lines can develop uniqueness, harmony, and diversity within the room.

Light

Lights could either be natural or man-made. This is considered as one of the most vital features of any space. If there is no light, then the other elements will have no significance. There are three kinds of light. These are accent, mood, and task lighting. Accent lighting can provide more focus on specific objects. Mood lighting can add ambiance to the room. Lastly, task lighting is added for its specific purpose.

Color

Color

Color is another essential element in interior design. Color can change the mood of a room and define its uniqueness. It can even change the perception of the size in a particular room. The psychology of color should not be ignored and must be used to its full potential.

Color can stimulate physical and psychological reactions. For instance, blue and green colors are perfect for bedrooms since they can entice tranquillity. On the other hand, it is best to use red color in the kitchen since it can entice the appetite. When choosing colors, it is important to consider the function of the room.

Texture

Texture indicates the physical surface of objects. Most often, this element is neglected, however, this can actually provide an unusual dimension to a particular space. Textures can be combined with space to provide a sense of depth.

Whether it is the texture from furniture, fabric, or accessories, this element can add detail, making it pleasant to the eyes. There are two types of textures. These are the actual and visual textures. Actual textures can be seen or felt while visual textures can only be seen.

Pattern

When patterns are combined with colors, it can make the room more appealing. Patterns are usually seen in wallpapers, fabrics, rugs, and furnishings. There are several types of patterns including organic, geometric, stripes, pictorial, etc. When choosing patterns, it is important to consider the style and size of the room.
